How did Norwegian tørrfisk become the national dish of a number of Caribbean islands as well as a popular food in West Africa? Through this performative dinner we will eat our way along the routes of Norway’s role in the Transatlantic Trade of enslaved People.

These dishes are served within the exhibition Veien Hjem, using the hand carved bowls and spoons that form an installation. The physical work, and performative dinner are based around the route of travel of Norwegian stockfish and its role of trading- and feeding- the triangular Trans Atlantic Trade of Enslaved people, connecting the coasts of Lofoten/Lofuohta, Accra and Port of Spain, questioning our unconscious -or hidden- complicities in oppressive structures and histories.

Sound-based performance with Damien Ajavon

This sound-based performance draws on the ideas of Christina Sharpe’s concept of “climate” and Tina Campt’s Listening to Images to explore how histories of labor, craft, and care can be felt through sound and movement. Sharpe’s “climate” speaks to the social and historical conditions that shape lived experience. These ideas are expressed through soundscapes evoking weather, tools, and machines, which serve as symbols of endurance, making, and survival.

Campt’s perspective on “listening” invites a deeper engagement with craft beyond the visual, encouraging attention to its quieter resonances. Acts like stitching or knitting are approached as living archives that carry memory, skill, and resilience.

Using a domestic knitting machine, live sound amplification, and immersive visual elements, the performance brings these ideas into a tactile and sonic space. Through repeated gestures and layered textures, it invites the audience to listen attentively and reflect on the connections between labor, care, and collective memory.

Kunstnersamtale i utstillingen Veien Hjem / Home

Velkommen til samtale med kunstnerne Amber Ablett, Bliss, Damien Ajavon, og Laura-Ann Morrison moderert av kurator Rafiki. Kunstnerne er aktuelle med gruppeutstillingen “Veien Hjem/Home” som vises ved Buskerud Kunstsenter fra 28. mai – 6. juli.

“Veien Hjem/Home” viser arbeidene til 5 kunstnere som tar utgangspunkt i kunstnernes individuelle og kollektive refleksjoner over både de fysiske sporene som er etterlatt og de mindre synlige, dvelende effektene av Norges kolonihistorie på det afrikanske kontinent. Kunstnerne er spesielt interessert i hvordan vi som individer og som folk beveger oss gjennom rom som fortsatt bærer ekko av en smertefull fortid. Med utgangspunkt i arkitektur, historiske arkiver og kulturarv utforsker kunstnerne hvordan Norges rolle i kolonialismen og den transatlantiske slavehandelen fortsatt påvirker nåtiden. Før samtalen vil kunstneren Damien Ajavon holde en performance som tar utgangspunkt i utstillingen og er spesielt utarbeidet i forbindelse med åpningen av Kulturytring Drammen.
